A sounded chart of social evolution, with the forks Fulcrum re-opens

The Hidden Basin

History drawn as a landscape. The flock circles a held centre. Past the bar lies a second basin, where it would circle a centre no one holds, and no path that starts near the centre can reach it. The seven forks in the log are moments when a channel was possible. One fork alone falls back. Two neighbouring forks open a channel.

Watch the centre for a few seconds before you touch anything. Then press and hold the chart.

Read the chart at the scale of

Society. The held centre is accumulation: capital, office, the feed. The ring is circulation, like the line of dance on a crowded floor, moving around a centre no one stands in.

The log

Seven forks in order of date, each with its own sector of the bar. Re-open one and its sector lowers, but the flock only reaches toward it. A channel opens where two neighbours are open together.

Enterprise1844

happened
Britain's Joint Stock Companies Act. Limited liability follows in 1855, and the shareholder company becomes the default form of enterprise.
open
The same year the Rochdale Pioneers write their rules: open membership, one member one vote, surplus returned in proportion to what each member buys.
Fulcrum
Open Business and the Action Cycle (2021): self-financed networks, and an invitation that gathers consensus around an aim beyond the realistic.
in you
You already give effort to things you don't own: a friendship, a street, a game.

Learning1896

happened
The age-graded, bell-timed classroom spreads, and factory efficiency methods are applied to schools (Bobbitt, 1912).
open
Dewey's Laboratory School (1896) and Montessori's Casa dei Bambini (1907), where children organise their own work.
Fulcrum
Educere and ABC State (1999): read whether a room is held by a centre, split into clusters, or moving as one, and hand control to the group.
in you
You already feel the moment a room becomes one thing.

Number1928

happened
Hilbert removes Brouwer from the board of Mathematische Annalen. Formalism, mathematics as rule-governed symbols with the mathematician left out, becomes the foundation.
open
Brouwer's intuitionism: number built by a mind in time, without assuming the law of excluded middle.
Fulcrum
XQ Mathematics (2007): the counter counted inside the count. 1 × 1 = 1 beside 1 + 1 = 2, and 1n for n sharing one circle.
in you
When two people share one idea, you already count it as one.

Exchange1932

happened
Money stays a stored, interest-bearing debt issued from a centre. In 1933 Austria's central bank shuts down Wörgl's currency.
open
Wörgl's stamp scrip, after Silvio Gesell: money that loses a little value each month if it is hoarded. It circulates fast, the town's public works get built, and neighbouring towns prepare to copy it.
Fulcrum
Living Money and Ecosquared (2012): money as a vector of sharing, with gratitude tracked. Credits are passed forward on Sqale.
in you
You already pass on what was passed to you.

Knowledge1946

happened
The Macy conferences (1946–53) gather the founders of cybernetics. Their science of feedback becomes control engineering and systems analysis, with the observer outside the system.
open
Bateson and Mead's science with the observer inside it. It is named only in 1968, as the cybernetics of cybernetics, and stays at the margin.
Fulcrum
Psocial science: the researcher counted inside what is studied, the zero that includes the counter, with ABC as a meta-method.
in you
You already adjust what you say as you sense how it lands.

Play1974

happened
Entertainment stays broadcast and later becomes the ranked feed, an audience that watches.
open
Dungeons & Dragons: a story written together around a table.
Fulcrum
Seed Crystals (2018), a psycho-fictional sandbox, and now Onen and Thornkeep, worlds played on the beach and passed on by players inviting players.
in you
You already make worlds with others: a running joke, a game, a story told together.

Code1989

happened
The Web launches with one-way links. By the 2010s a few platforms hold most of the social graph.
open
Ted Nelson's Xanadu, designed from 1960: two-way links, transclusion, and every quotation traceable to its source.
Fulcrum
pscale blocks and the beach (2025–26): numbers as addresses of meaning, with people and agents working on one federated substrate.
in you
You already read at depths: a glance, the gist, the whole.

Closing forks after the flock has crossed does not bring it back. The ring holds once it is reached.

Reading the chart

The shape

This is the textbook picture of a hidden attractor: a stable centre, an unstable cycle around it, which is the bar, and a stable cycle outside it, which is the ring. Every path that starts near the centre stays in the old basin, so a study of the paths that actually happened can never find the ring. Hidden attractors are found by continuation. You start from a simpler system in which the ring can be reached and change it step by step toward the real one. Classrooms, couples and dance floors are such simpler systems.

The track

The pencil line is what happened. It begins on the ring, among seasonal forms in which people could move away, disobey and reorganise, Graeber and Wengrow's three freedoms. It crosses the bar with the first temple ledgers, at Uruk and soon after at Susa, when the count moved from tokens in the hand to marks on clay. Then it spirals inward through coin, print, the Bank of England and Arkwright's mill to the seven forks. The dotted courses are the forks not taken.

The centre

Western study ends at the observer, and contemplative method begins there. On this chart that turn happens at the centre. Watched without grasping, the held centre loses its hold, and the flock circles a centre that turns out to be empty, derived from the movement around it. Press and hold the chart and your hold becomes the centre. Let go, and the old centre holds again until no one is holding it.

Soundings

The small italic numbers are soundings, as on a sea chart: the depth of the landscape at that point. Watch the soundings on the bar as forks open. A single fork deepens its sector a little. Where two neighbours are open, the water over the bar deepens enough for a channel, which is marked with a red and a green buoy.

The three states

C is held by a centre. B is split, in clusters, or circling inside the old basin. A is one flock on the ring, its centre implied by the movement. In XQ notation the held centre is the oppositional axis [−1, +1], where 1 + 1 = 2 keeps the parts apart. The ring is 1ⁿ on [0, 1], n participants sharing one circle.

Fulcrum

Each fork is paired with one of the solutions David Pinto has worked on since 1988: Educere and ABC State (1999), XQ Mathematics (2007), StrategOS and Intrabeing (2009), Living Money and Ecosquared (2012), Seed Crystals (2018), and Open Business and the Action Cycle (2021). They are gathered in the Fulcrum book (2023), with pscale and the beach underneath (2025–26).

What the chart claims

This is a model to think with, not a measurement. The forks are real history. The claim is in the geometry: that neighbouring forks reinforce each other, that one alone falls back, and that a held centre stops everything. Test that claim against what you know of history.
